Puffy Eyes

Puffy eyes in the morning happen to us all at some time or another, but it is not something to despair about, the remedy is near at hand. First you have to understand the causes of Puffy or Swollen Eyes and understand the difference between puffy eyes and bags under the eyes. The main difference is that puffy eyes are usually a temporary problem caused primarily by retention of fluid. To get rid of puffy eyes is generally a simple process. Whereas bags under the eyes are generally caused by an accumulation of fat in the area below the eye, this fatty area will usually develop gradually over a period of time. Once developed the most common method of removal is by way of surgery although non-surgical methods are available to improve appearances of baggy eyes. Many treatments for puffy eyes can be used but with slightly more limited effectiveness for baggy eyes. Minor puffiness noticed when rising in the morning is generally caused by an accumulation of fluids, which are normally reduced or eliminated by mid-morning as gravity drains the fluid that has accumulated throughout the night. So here we have Symptoms of Puffy or Swollen Eyes:

  • Puffiness or swelling of the upper and lower eyelids, usually in the morning.
  • Sometimes accompanied by irritation and/or redness.
  • Inability to open or close the eyes.

Here we have various causes of Puffy or Swollen eyes:

  • Dehydration: When the body becomes dehydrated it begins to store water can be the cause of puffy eyes.
  • Diet: Consuming alcohol or salty foods before going to sleep. Alcohol causes puffy eyes by lowering anti-diuretic hormones (ADH) in the body.     These levels will normalize and the puffiness usually subsides at about the same time your hangover subsides.
  • Lack of sleep.
  • Allergies: If your puffy eyes are accompanied by redness and itching, the cause could be associated with an allergy. Possible factors contributing could include feather pillows, linen fabric, face-creams, dust, pollen, or food.
  • Aging: As we get older our skin begins to loose its flexibility, causing swollen eyes.
  • Irritation from contact lenses
  • Sinusitis
  • Post operation or surgical recovery
  • Emotional hence tearful and stress filled experience
  • Hormonal changes: The days shortly before and during menstruation cause hormone levels to fluctuate, this can result in water retention around the eyelids.
  • High blood pressure: Pushes fluids into the tissue around the eyes, may result in swelling.
  • Eyelid dermatitis: A rash on the skin just affecting the eyelids, usually caused by an allergic reaction to make-up or skin-care products.
  • Drugs: Drugs such as lithium that cause the thyroid to become less productive can also result in swollen eyes.
  • Heredity or genetic

  • Two moistened caffeine tea bags will work the same way by reducing puffiness because caffeine constricts blood vessels and reduces swelling.
  • A few egg whites, stiffly beaten, and applied with a brush to the face and under the eyes will make the skin feel tighter and look less puffy. Add a drop or two of witch hazel which also reduces swelling and will keep the egg whites from drying to rapidly.
  • Rinse your face in cold water when you wake up or when puffy eyes persist anytime of the day to constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling. Also a great energizer.
  • Making sure you drink plenty of water will also help reduce puffy eyes. When you are dehydrated your body begins to store water as a defense system this will only add to puffiness around the eyes.
  • An unexpected enemy responsible for mid-day eye puffiness can be finger nail polish containing formaldehyde. There are available formaldehyde-free nail polishes that you should look at if you have an allergy problem. Sometimes hair spray or a change of eye makeup can also cause swelling in the eye area.
